What is dry eyes disease?
Dry eye syndrome, or dry eye disease, is a common condition that occurs when the eyes don't make enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly.
What are the causes of dry eyes?
- Aging.
- Certain types of medications.
- LASIK and other refractive surgeries.
- Hormonal changes, including menopause.
- Sjogren’s syndrome autoimmune diseases.
- Contact lens wear.
- Ladies eye liner & make up.
- Habits and work environment.
- Poor blink rate or incomplete blink.
- Excessive heat and air conditioning.
What are the symptoms of dry eyes?
Sore, uncomfortable eyes Red eye Burning, hot feeling Blurred vision Watery eyes Difficulty keeping eyes open fully
How are dry eyes diagnosed?
Dry eyes can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. Testing, with emphasis on the evaluation of the quantity and quality of tears produced by the eyes, may include:
- Patient history to determine the patient's symptoms and to note any general health problems, medications or environmental factors.
- External examination of the eye, including lid structure and blink dynamics.
- Evaluation of the eyelids and cornea using bright light and magnification.
- Measurement of the quantity and quality of tears for any abnormalities.
How dry eyes syndrome is treated?
Dry eye syndrome isn't usually a serious condition. Treatments are available to help relieve the symptoms, which include:
- Eye drops to lubricate the eyes.
- Medications to reduce any inflammation.
- Evaluation of the eyelids and cornea using bright light and magnification.
- If necessary, surgery to prevent tears from draining away easily.
What you can do?
- Improve your surroundings ,reduce heat, air circulating, dust allergens.
- Take scheduled breaks from computer.
- Drink more water, reduce coffee intake.
- Increase blink rate.
